Why do cats miscarry???

Miscarriage is quite common in cats. Many medical reasons can cause this condition. The cat should be evaluated immediately after the miscarriage. They should be screened for general health conditions to make sure the miscarriage is not due to a medical condition

  1. Causes of miscarriage in cats

The most common cause of miscarriage in cats is a hormone imbalance. Some other causes include:

  • Fungal miscarriages often cause bleeding in the uterus and can lead to miscarriage.
  • If the cat has a hormone imbalance, the fetus can die, causing a stillbirth or miscarriage. Fetal death may also be related to fetal genetic disorders
  • Neospora Caninum- parasite, less commonly found in cats and common in dogs. Usually transmitted when a cat shares food or drinks with an infected dog and vice versa.
  1. Symptoms of Cat Miscarriage

If a cat has experienced a miscarriage, the most common thing to notify owners of a cat having a miscarriage is vaginal bleeding. There may also be an abnormal amount of vaginal discharge. Another manifestation is that the cat may be born prematurely.

  1. Diagnose

A blood test will be conducted to detect the presence of parasites or other diseases in the cat. Veterinarians can use ultrasound to diagnose a pregnant cat or look for what’s left in the cat’s uterus after a miscarriage.

Occasionally, a cat’s uterus will not be able to completely remove any residual miscarriage problems (e.g. placental tissues), leading to infection or internal bleeding.

  1. Treating a Miscarriage Cat

For cats that have experienced a bacterial or parasitic miscarriage, your veterinarian will diagnose the condition and offer a variety of medical treatment options. In addition, the cat should be carefully monitored afterward for other signs of a possible more serious health condition.

After your cat has had a miscarriage, there may be discomfort, vaginal bleeding, or unusual bleeding. In many cases, some long-term bacterial problems will arise such as a gynecological infection.

So pet owners should carefully observe their cat’s behavior to make sure no other serious problems develop.

Wishing you and your pet good health!
