What is the pH of the soil and the importance of pH. Understand What is the pH of the soil? as well asThe importance of pH for plants help us choose the right plants for that soil, or can help them improve soil quality.

Experiment using Manure to improve soil

Ekrem Ozlu of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his team performed two field experiments in South Dakota. From 2003 to 2015, the research team applied manure or inorganic fertilizers to the experimental plots growing corn and soybeans. They use levels organic fertilizer low, medium to high, and medium and high levels of inorganic fertilizers. They also set up a plot without fertilizer as a control and got very surprising results:

  • Manure Helps keep soil pH – at a value that is safe for plants. Whereas using inorganic fertilizers makes the soil more acidic.
  • Manure increased soil organic matter at all collected soil depths compared with the inorganic fertilizer plot and the control plot. More carbon means better soil structure.

Ozlu et al concluded that long-term manure application improved most soil properties compared with inorganic fertilizers. “I recommend farmers to use composted manure as it is a fertilizer that supports better soil quality by improving most soil properties,” says Ozlu. Inorganic fertilizers were better in terms of electrical conductivity, but did not improve other soil properties such as improving pH or crop yield compared with manure application.
