Techniques of growing Duong Quy trees – Precious medicinal herbs

Duong Quy is one of the precious herbs originating from China. With many health benefits, they are widely grown in Vietnam in recent years. To learn more about this herb as well Dang Quy tree planting techniquesPlease take a look at the following article.

  1. Planting in the nursery

– Choose a good land, away from the wind, porous, lots of humus, convenient for irrigation, convenient for transportation. Plow and harrow thoroughly, clear the grass, then go to the bed from 1-2 m, the bed is 27-30cm high, the trench is 25-30cm wide for easy care and travel.

– Use well-rotted manure with phosphate fertilizer for lining, the amount of fertilizer is 3-5 tons/ha; superphosphate 200 kg/ha.

– Seeds must be lightly sun-dried before sowing, then soaked in hot water (1 boiling, 3 cold), at a temperature of 27 – 30 degrees, soaked for 1 day and night, picked out, drained and then sown.

– Amount of seeds to sow: 60 – 75 kg/ha, spread or row in rows. After sowing, cover with a layer of flour 1.5cm thick and top with straw.

Nursery care:

+ Plants 1.5cm tall need to remove the top layer of straw.

+ Trees 3cm high, remove the entire layer of straw.

+ Plants 7cm tall weeded for the first time, then weeded every 5-7 days continuously, paying attention to always make sure the grass is clean so that the seedlings do not overwhelm their growth but develop well.

+ This period should not be applied to the tree, to keep the tree growing in balance, the delay in flowering is a favorable condition for the tree of Dang Quy.

  1. Choose planting area and manage planting land

2.1. Land management:

– The planting area is far from residential areas, far from neighboring industrial zones, there is no risk of soil contamination transmission.

– The soil composition is assessed, meeting the requirements for growing medicinal plants according to GAP criteria.

2.2. Water resources and irrigation management

– Used for post-harvest and processing use well water. Well water quality has been assessed as satisfactory for use, with no risk of soil contamination.

– Wastewater from cultivation areas and wastewater from processing industrial zones must not be reused in the production area of medicinal herbs.

  1. Breeds and breeding techniques

– The variety that is being grown is popularly imported from Japan.

– Currently, there are two methods to be used to have Duong Quy seedlings planted in production:

+ Sow seeds directly into production fields.

+ Sow seeds in pots or nurseries to nurse seedlings, then plant them in production fields.

Note: Before sowing, it is also necessary to select, re-dry the seeds and try to germinate to reach > or equal to 70% before sowing. Depending on the high or low germination rate, there will be an appropriate amount of seeds: Straight sowing is usually about 4 – 4.5 kg/ha, sowing in pots is about 2 – 2.5 kg/ha.

  1. Technique of planting Duong Quy trees

4.1. Crop rotation or intercropping

The common crop rotation formula is usually:

+ Duong Quy – Early season rice – Duong Quy.

+ Dong quai – summer-autumn soybeans – Duong Quy.

+ Dang Quy – Eliminate Chemistry – Dang Quy.

4.2. Planting season

– High mountains: The suitable planting time is in September – October, medicinal herbs are harvested in November – December next year.

– Plains: The appropriate planting time is in early October, medicinal herbs are harvested in late June and early July next year.

4.3. Planting and tillage techniques

– As a crop that cannot be grown in intercropping, after planting Duong Quy, it is necessary to switch to planting beans, potatoes, wheat, etc., after 2 or 3 years of rotation to replant. If planting Duong Quy continuously, the quality and output of medicinal herbs will decrease.

– The land needs to be plowed carefully, picked up weeds, plowed and divided the bed about 1.4m, continued to the preliminary bed, evenly spread the amount of manure, kitchen ash, phosphate fertilizer on the surface of the bed, continue to fill the bed with fertilizer. , the height of the bed should be 30-35cm, the bed surface is 90-95cm wide.

– Soil for planting Duong Quy needs to choose good soil, mixed sand (or light meat) with plenty of humus, convenient irrigation, soil pH 5.5 – 6.

  1. Fertilizer technique

The amount of fertilizer for 1 ha: 25 tons of manure, 543 kg of urea nitrogen, 625 kg of super phosphate, 250 kg of phosphate sulphate, 2,000 – 2,500 kg/ha of kitchen ash.

How to fertilize:

– Fertilize all rotting manure + phosphate + kitchen ash.

– Fertilizer: Nitrogen and potassium fertilizers are applied 5 times.

+ First time: When the tree has 5 leaves, apply 50 kg of urea/ha.

+ Second time: When the tree has 7 leaves, apply 80 kg of urea/ha.

+ 3rd time: When the tree has 9 leaves, apply 110 kg of urea/ha.

+ 4th time: When the tree has 11 leaves, apply 140 kg of urea + 125 kg of potassium sulphate/ha.

+ 5th time: When the tree has 13 leaves, apply the remaining amount of nitrogen and potassium (163 kg of urea + 125 kg of potassium sulphate/ha).

  1. Planting density and spacing

Dong quai can choose one of the following planting spacing densities:

– Density of 330,000 plants/ha with a distance of 20 x 15cm – 1 tree.

– Density of 25,000 trees/ha with a distance of 20 x 20cm – 1 tree.

– Density of 200,000 plants/ha with a distance of 20 x 25cm – 1 tree.

– Density of 40,000 plants/ha with a distance of 10 x 25cm – 1 tree.

  1. Care and management of fields

– Trimming trees (for the method of direct sowing in the field): Usually prune the tree 2-3 times when the tree has 3 leaves, 5 leaves, and 7 leaves.

– Weeding, cultivating, plowing: Often combined with weeding and fertilizing. Although the number of weeding times may be less, the field must always be clean of weeds.

– Cultivation: Need to apply a lot of fertilizer in the middle and late period, preferably with oil-dried fertilizer applied to the base edge and raised the soil. Need to prune trees that sprout a lot, and thin trees, remove old leaves buried in the ground as manure.

– Water for 1 night, then drain the water to dry. If the drought period is long, it can be watered once every 18-20 days.
