Technical Guide to Breeding Ferrets

Weasel is an animal with high economic value, so it is receiving the attention of many people. In response to that interest, Agrisearch.net would like to introduce to everyone breeding techniques for ferrets high efficiency.

  1. Breeding barn

Because ferrets live in burrows, their cages do not need to be sophisticated, but they need to be built solidly to prevent weasels from breaking the cage and escaping. The system of drinking water and fecal waste water needs to be separate to prevent ferrets from eating dirty, drinking dirty easily to get sick, especially diarrhea.

The cage needs to be designed with cement or soil floor and is divided into many compartments, each compartment has an area of about 5-10 m2 to lock the mink pairs in for them to mate. If the cage has many floors, the floors are separated by a small trellis screen, to prevent the ferrets from indenting.

  1. Choose ferret breed

First, weasel owners need to know how to distinguish females and males. When weasel is young, put them on their back, if there are protruding copulation spines, it is a male, not a female.

When choosing a breed, you should choose healthy, uninjured ferrets, sharp eyes and nose, and move quickly. Should choose a breed from 1 – 1.5 kg for easy raising, they will get used to the new environment and new caregivers better. Choosing ferrets that are too large will make them stressed and slow to reproduce.

  1. Food for ferrets

Food for ferrets during the breeding season must provide a lot of nutrition and protein from pork, worms, snakes, termites (their favorite foods). In the evening, strengthen the weasel to eat meat and fish because they have the habit of eating at night, during the day it is just a snack.

In addition, feed ferrets with ripe bananas, peeled, so that the whole fruit (1 – 2 fruits / animal / meal) mixed with sugar porridge cooked fine (for relatively sweet like cooking tea). When raising ferrets, all kinds of food must be given to ferrets in small amounts, then gradually increased.

  1. Pairing, breeding, care

When the ferrets begin to go into heat, the male releases a strong scent, and the female often bites and destroys the cage. Now let them pair together, observe the mating process, and separate them immediately after mating is over to avoid them biting each other. Female ferrets are usually pregnant for 58-62 days.

In the case of ferrets having many births, separate each pair for alternate feeding, about 1 week later, they will be kept together again. About 30 days before giving birth, it is necessary to supplement the necessary nutrients for the mother ferret such as B.complex, multivitamins, etc. After giving birth, the mother ferret should drink enough water. The ferrets are 35 days old to eat their mother’s food.

  1. Prevention

In order for ferrets not to get sick, it is necessary to take care of feeding enough, avoid rancid food and regularly clean the cage. On hot days, you should bring the barn out to dry to kill bacteria and reduce odors.

We look forward to the amount of information we share. Farmers will be more confident in building a model of breeding ferrets for themselves.
