At this stage, the orchid needs to rest, so it is necessary to minimize the factors that stimulate growth. Not taking good care of it can cause the orchid to die quickly.
When the weather starts to get cold, it is also the time of transition of orchids. In the cold season, orchids take a rest to prepare for spring flowers (Ngoc Diem (Dai Chau), Gia Hac (Phi Diep) Spring, Chicken thighs, Long wings. Tu, Christmas Spring, Kieu Thuy Tien …).
The Lan family in particular needs an annual resting season, the rainy season will start to grow again, without paying too much attention to the nutritional needs and the green outside.
In the resting season, the roots often shrivel, the pseudobulbs are slightly wrinkled, the leaves of Hoang Thao are yellow, and the leaves are gradually falling from the base.
The holiday season starts from December to April next year in the South, from October to February in the North, this time the temperature and humidity are the lowest of the year.
Holiday season of Hoang Thao, Dai Chau, Cattleya… 1-3 months. Holiday season of Ho Diep, Comedy… 1-2 weeks.
In the cold season, orchids often appear small black spots or dark brown indentations that gradually cause yellowing of leaves, and plants die. In addition, the time to withstand the cold is too long, the tree wilts, it is easy to rot.
Limits of tolerance to cold temperatures of some orchid varieties: Sword, Vu Nu, Hai…10-12°C; Cattleya, Hoang Thao, Queen…12-16°C; Vanda, Dai Chau, Fox, Ho Diep…18-21°C; some varieties of deciduous orchids (Dumpling Chicken, Gia Hac, Long Tu, Hoang Thao U Loi), Hai, Kiem… need to be cold below 10°C for 3 weeks in a row to flower.
Some issues to keep in mind when caring for orchids in this cold season.
The first is the problem of watering, in the cold season the orchid absorbs less water. Need to reduce the amount of water to 1/4 compared to normal, watering once every 3 days, drenching the roots.
Mist watering in the morning when the sun has risen to thaw or in the afternoon before sunset (do not water at night), there are areas in the North that are too cold and cold, stop watering completely (usually below 10°C). .
With the flowering deciduous orchid line, the water will be completely cut off when the leaves have fallen half of the stem, if the stem is too shriveled, it will be watered.
Hang the tree in a high, airy place and avoid strong drafts that cause water loss and atrophy.
The second is fertilizer, in the cold season, orchids absorb less fertilizer, do not need any fertilizer, if fertilizing, periodically every 2-3 weeks.
Before and during the cold season, it is advisable to add phosphorus to the orchid to help the plant grow stronger (Sieu Lan Ha, Sieu Lan Kina).
In addition, it is necessary to spray Nano Copper, Dithane M-45 to help fight cold, kill bacteria very well, every 2 weeks or once a week if it is cold a lot, prolonging the day.
Additional KNO3KY2SO4 Helps to limit water loss. If the orchid is bud, avoid spraying fertilizer on the buds, only spray on the roots and leaves.
TEMPERATURE & LIGHT
The third is the light temperature, when the temperature drops sharply, in low light, to avoid freezing cold should be brought indoors with glass doors (precious orchids should be applied). Light a 100W bulb, keep it under low heat for orchids, monitor and adjust the appropriate temperature.
Light with black hair to increase heat or cover the orchid garden with canvas.
Lack of light, plants will not flower.
In any year, when it becomes cold early, when it is cold, it will give flowers early. On the contrary, when the rest season comes late, the flowers will bloom later.
Should have a roof (but still ensure enough light) to avoid rain and drafts, causing water to collect on leaves when it is too cold, causing frostbite.
Finally, pay attention to the roots. Root development will help the plant grow and flower more. Fertilize periodically and keep moderately moist.
If the roots are not well developed, the watering density is reduced. For plants that are about to flower, they need to keep the roots moist more than other plants.
This season, if you transplant forest orchids, you need to keep the root moist for rooting and keiki. Cut the roots to reduce the old dry, leaving 1-2 cm.
Wish you all have beautiful and healthy orchids!
