Some effective technical models of pepper intercropping with coffee

The model of intercropping pepper and coffee trees is being applied by many households in the Central Highlands and neighboring provinces and has stable economic efficiency, in this article we send you some intercropping models. cultivation, advantages and disadvantages of coffee pepper intercropping. We invite you to consult.

Conditions for intercropping 2 crops

– Coffee growing area with the following conditions: garden slope less than 15°, favorable watering conditions; soil layer over 70 cm thick, well drained; The groundwater level is more than 100 cm deep.

– The area under coffee plantations with the rate of infection with yellow leaves, root rot caused by nematodes or fungi in the soil is not more than 5%, for new plantings, replanting gardens and for existing commercial coffee gardens. more than 10%.

– The pepper varieties used for intercropping are those that have been recognized by the competent authorities.

We will first analyze the pros and cons of this intercropping model

Advantages of pepper and coffee intercropping model

  • Diversify crops, help increase income, reduce price risk
  • Limit the spread of pests and diseases when monoculture (eg: diseases die quickly, die slowly …)
  • Reduce labor costs for each stage
  • Growing live pepper, taking advantage of shade and windbreak for coffee, thereby saving water for irrigation, plants grow healthier

Disadvantages of pepper and coffee intercropping model

  • Two types of plants are common hosts for some pests such as nematodes, mealybugs that damage roots
  • Farming techniques are different, so there is more or less influence when taking care
  • Yield is not as high as monoculture

The technique of peppering coffee

Model 1:

  • Coffee is planted at a distance of 3m x 3m
  • For every 2 rows of coffee, we alternate a row of pepper (using live poles, it is recommended to use black cassava, acacia, cages, and forests) at the same distance.
  • Plant in the north-south direction to catch the sun evenly throughout the garden
  • Stopping pepper posts at a height of 4m-6m, moderate pruning
  • Light sink at the pier, while the coffee is deep in the sink to help the post drain water better, limiting waterlogging in the rainy season.

Model 2:

  • Planting coffee with a distance of 3.3m to 3.5m
  • Plant live pepper posts at the intersection corners of the coffee pots, so that the row spacing is 7m, and the poles are 3.5m apart.
  • When planting, also plant in the north-south direction to catch the sun
  • Stopping pepper posts at a height of 6m or more, strong pruning algae
  • The coffee tank needs to be deep, the place where the pillar is planted does not need to be hit
Coffee interspersed pepper (planted at the corner of the intersection of coffee tanks)

In addition, in both models, we can take advantage of the windbreak trees at the edge of the garden to drop more pepper. Models 1 and 2 both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Depending on the ability to care, the terrain, you can choose the appropriate model.

Fertilization

Fertilizer for coffee plants: Fertilize with a dose of 5-10 kg of manure/plant, once every 2 years. Apply in a trench at the beginning or middle of the rainy season, trenches are dug along one side of the canopy 20 cm wide, 25 – 30 cm deep, need to be filled with soil after fertilizing. The following years the trench was dug in a different direction.

Fertilizer for pepper plants: Fertilize at a dose of 5-10 kg/head, once a year, use manure. Fertilize at the beginning of the rainy season, you can apply it on the ground and then use straw, green manure plants, and dry grass on manure. Limit digging deep trenches to fertilize manure.

If manure is not available, apply bio-organic or microbial-organic fertilizers in an equivalent amount.

Green manure can be added (4-5 tons of green manure equivalent to 1 ton of manure) and plant residues available at the garden or locally. It is possible to fertilize in combination with some biological products that have the effect of limiting the growth of nematodes and antagonizing some harmful fungi in the soil.

Weeding

– Weeding 3-4 times a year on the entire area;

– For sloping land: : Weeding by ice, not weeding the entire area;

– The use of herbicides is not recommended;

– The grass in the pepper root must be pulled by hand.

Common pest control

– Pest control for coffee: On the types of intercropping, the following main pests and diseases appear: Green scale aphid, brown scale aphid, fruit mealybug, leaf yellow disease, root rot, stem cracking disease, pink fungus.

– Pest control for pepper: Pay attention to the prevention of sucking aphids, net bugs, mealybugs that damage roots, fast-dead diseases and slow-dead diseases.
