Sharing Technical Details of Breeding Rabbits

Raising rabbits is a trend that many farmers are interested in because it is easy to raise and highly profitable. In order to raise rabbits for good productivity, it is very important to choose male and female breeds and take care of breeding rabbits. If you still have many doubts in breeding rabbit breeding techniquesdo not rush to skip this article.

Choose varieties

Choose fast rabbits in a flock with good parents, breeding rabbits can be weaned later than about 6 weeks old instead of 3-4 weeks.

After weaning, the female and male should be separated immediately or can be delayed 1-2 weeks later. When weaning baby rabbits, take the mother rabbit out of the cage and leave the baby rabbit in the old cage to avoid contact with the cage surface and movement. Vaccination for rabbits must be avoided when the rabbit is weak and 2 injections must be about 1 month apart.

When rabbits are 4 months old, separate them and raise them in separate cages; then number the breeding rabbits to distinguish and make a growth control sheet; reproduction of female and male rabbits.

Choose rabbits that are big but not too fat; equal length and width, especially the buttocks; relatively light head; smooth hair. It is often difficult to choose a good female rabbit based on appearance alone. Therefore, it is necessary to choose the female rabbits that her mother gave birth to wrong, and raise the children well.

Choosing a male rabbit is relatively important, as he is more likely to transmit his characteristics more widely than the female rabbit. Criteria for selecting male rabbits: large baby, moderately large head; large breasts, buttocks and shoulders; wide back; large hind legs; must meet the prescribed weight standards for each breed of rabbit.

Care for breeding rabbits

  • How to take care of male rabbits

The requirement for male rabbits is to mate many female rabbits and achieve a high conception rate, usually reaching an average rate of over 70%. Avoid too fat or too thin male rabbits. Avoid overfeeding rabbits, making male rabbits lazy, producing poor sperm. Diets in addition to vegetables need to add rice, corn or beans, can feed rice for 3 consecutive days, the results of fertilization will be very good. Food should be rich in protein and vitamins especially vitamins A and E because they play an important role on the basis of cell and muscle tissue development. Usually one male rabbit can mate for 9-12 female rabbits. The age of male rabbits can be used from 8-12 months old.

  • Age for rabbits to breed

It is recommended to breed rabbits at 8 months of age for male rabbits and 6 months for female rabbits. In hatcheries, female rabbits breed at 8 months and male rabbits at 10 months.

A male rabbit can jump from 8 to 12 female rabbits (average 10). The time to use the breed rabbit depends on: the number of female rabbits laying and the female rabbit’s health status. If female rabbits give birth to 5 litters/year, they can be used within 3 years, then fattened for sale. For male rabbits, it can be used for 3 years depending on its health status and ability to produce offspring.

Mating and spawning

In case the female rabbit refuses to let the male rabbit jump, the female rabbit can be stimulated as follows: put the female rabbit in the male rabbit’s cage for a few hours, then remove the female rabbit. Or put a handful of grass from the male rabbit’s cage into the female rabbit’s cage, can also keep the female rabbit next to the male rabbit’s cage for 24-48 hours. Then the female rabbit can be allowed to jump. Hormones can also be used to stimulate female rabbits to breed and tolerate male mating in cases where the female rabbit does not show signs of breeding and does not allow the male rabbit to jump.

Usually for rabbits to breed in the early morning or cool afternoon, if mating in hot conditions will not be favorable due to heat stress.

Get the female rabbit to put it gently into the male rabbit’s cage, do not put the male rabbit in the female rabbit’s cage because it can make the male rabbit panic with the new environment and refuse to mate. Must observe the rabbit jumping, when the female rabbit jumps, the male rabbit will squeal and fall to the side to pass. Only let the rabbit jump 1-2 times, do not leave the female rabbit in the male rabbit’s cage all night, making both male and female rabbits exhausted. Using 2 different male rabbits to jump 1 female rabbit has limitations: no male genetics can be determined and the weak female rabbit will not accept the male.

  • Taking care of pregnant female rabbits

The gestation period of rabbits is 30 days, which can be 1-2 days earlier or later. After letting the rabbit jump, if about 6-7 days later, the rabbit bites grass and fur to make a nest, it can be concluded that the rabbit is not pregnant. Pregnant rabbits should be placed in a quiet, secluded place and after 14-15 days, antenatal care should be taken, not after the 18th day.

By hand: place the female rabbit gently on the rough surface, hold the rabbit’s ears and shoulder with the right hand, place the left hand under the rabbit’s body between the hind legs and in front of the pelvis, place the thumb on one side and the other 4 fingers on the other side. , glide gently from front to back, if you meet a small round lump like a string worm, the rabbit is pregnant. It should be distinguished from rabbit droppings located near the spine and rectum.

Then put the rabbit in a larger cage, have regular drinking water, have adequate grass and add supplementary food, fish meal, oil cake.

Based on the recorded date of mating to prepare the day of the rabbit’s birth. Normally, the gestation period of rabbits is 1 month, but rabbits can give birth 1-2 days earlier or later. It is necessary to prepare a nest for rabbits, the nest can be made of wood or use bamboo or plastic baskets, put in a little rags. Before giving birth, the mother rabbit will bite the fur on the abdomen and lining the nest. Rabbits give birth quickly (about 15-20 minutes) and give birth on their own. Need to monitor to bring out the baby rabbit, sometimes help open the amniotic sac to prevent the baby from suffocation; In addition, avoiding the mother rabbit kicking, biting or eating her baby (especially in the first litter) will help reduce the loss rate, and at the same time take the placenta to bury.

  • Early life care

Breastfeeding of newborn rabbits is important, and if done carefully and fully, will increase the number of live puppies after weaning. Failure often occurs at this stage. Baby rabbits need help to breastfeed, especially mother rabbits in the first litter, only once a day in the morning. Newborn baby rabbits can be separated from their mother to put in a plastic liner in a dry, warm place and avoid being thrown into the nest by the mother or crushed to death. Fully breastfed rabbits will sleep peacefully and have a glossy skin, in case of lack of milk, rabbits will move a lot and wrinkle their skin and become emaciated.

The mother rabbit after giving birth should be given antibiotics for 3 days to prevent genital infections (metritis, mastitis). One of the following antibiotics can be injected: Forloxin (1 ml/8 – 10 kg body weight, once a day, for 3 consecutive days) or Vime-Apracin (1 ml/5 – 7 kg body weight, once a day) , 3 consecutive days) or Ceptiket (1ml/10 kg body weight, daily/time, 3 consecutive days)

type the following products in an alternating manner, one type per day, 1 dose subcutaneously: Vime Canlamin (1 ml/5 kg body weight) or Vime-ATP (0.5 – 1 ml/head) or Calcium-Magne ( 0.5 – 1 ml/head) or Vimekat (1 ml/5 kg body weight)

On the 3rd day, the mother rabbit can be re-mixed if the mother does not lose strength, inject more: Poly AD (intramuscular injection 0.2 – 0.3 ml/head)

Baby rabbits are very susceptible to E.coli infection from the rearing environment, from the mother…so they can develop the disease from a very young age (in the first week). The treatment is relatively difficult because rabbits often have sepsis, neurological manifestations such as: head tilt, neck tilt, tremors, jerks when touched, abdominal distension, … and death. Prophylaxis with antibiotics can be applied on days 5 – 7 with: Aralis (1 ml/5 kg body weight orally for 3 consecutive days).

Coccidiosis affects rabbits very badly and is difficult to treat, especially liver coccidiosis. Should prevent coccidiosis right from the early stages of life. Use Vicox Toltra, 1 ml/2.5 kg body weight.

Rabbits open their eyes from 9-13 days, can learn to eat in the rabbit’s cage with good green vegetables and quality supplements without having to follow the mother. Thus, we create conditions for good weaning and the mother rabbit is less affected by the baby rabbit. Usually we wean them from 30-35 days old.

The most dangerous disease and very common in Vietnam for rabbits should be vaccinated, which is rabbit hemorrhagic disease at 2 months of age. Use rabbit haemorrhagic vaccine dose of 1 ml/head. Dose 2 should be repeated 4 weeks later to strengthen immunity, then every 5-6 months repeat a dose.
