Herbal-based Formulations

One of the popular forms of biological pesticides is derived from the neem tree (Azadirachta indica A. Juss), also known as the drought-resistant tree. Vineem 1500 EC, produced by the Southern Disinfectant Company, is a widely used biological pesticide extracted from neem seeds containing azadirachtin.

This pesticide is effective in controlling various pests on rice, vegetables, industrial plants, fruit trees, flowers, and ornamental plants. It works by causing feeding disruption, repelling pests, inhibiting molting and egg-laying, and reducing reproductive capabilities. These pesticides do not induce pest resistance, do not affect natural enemies, and leave no residues on crops.

Bacterial-based Formulations

BT products (Bacillus thuringiensis var.) belong to the group of biological pesticides derived from bacteria. They have a broad and effective spectrum of pest control, targeting leaf rollers, webworms, armyworms, leaf miners, and omnivorous pests. Pests that consume this pesticide will stop feeding within a few hours and die within 1-3 days. BT formulations have been extensively studied in Vietnam since 1971.

Some bacterial-based products available in the market include Vi-BT 32000WP, 16000WP; BT Xentary 35WDG, Firibiotox P (powder form), and Firibiotox C (concentrated liquid form). These products are effective against major pests found in rice fields, such as green and white leafhoppers, leaf rollers, and stem borers.

The Applied Agriculture and Applied Biology Department at Can Tho University has also researched and produced two bacterial-based pesticides called Biobac and Biosar. Biobac is derived from a locally available bacterial strain capable of controlling and suppressing the growth of the fungus causing sheath blight in rice. Biosar is extracted from certain plant species that stimulate resistance against blast disease (Pyricularia grisea) in rice leaves. However, these products have not yet been commercialized.

Fungal-based Formulations

Fungal-based pesticides contain active ingredients like abamectin and emamectin benzoate, effectively targeting leaf-eating caterpillars, mites, webworms, omnivorous pests, and aphids. These pesticides have a quick knockdown effect and rapidly degrade in the environment, posing minimal risk to humans and the ecosystem. Some commonly used products in this category include Binhtox 1.8EC, Abasuper 3.6EC, Sertin 5.0EC, Sisau 4.5EC, Agun 5WDG, Golnitor 50WDG, Emaben 2.0EC, and Susuper 1.9EC.

The use of active ingredient, validamycin A derived from streptomyces fungus, is quite prominent in controlling diseases such as rice sheath blight, pink disease in rubber trees, damping-off in tomato and potato plants, as well as fungal diseases in cotton plants. Some products in this group include Vivadamy, Vanicide, Vali, Tung vali 5SC, Vida 3SC, Validan 5DD, Stepguard 50SP, and Poner 40SP, which are effective against sclerotium decay disease.

Virus-based Formulations

One notable example is the group of products derived from NPV (nucleopolyhedrovirus), a highly specific virus that only infects and eliminates armyworms. These formulations are highly effective in controlling pests on cotton, beans, corn, onions, grapes, and other crops.

Parasitic Wasp-based Formulations

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) are parasitic wasps that infect and cause diseases in insects. They have gained recognition due to their fast-acting and broad-spectrum pest control capabilities. These products are safe for humans and animals, pose no risk of pest resistance, and do not harm beneficial organisms. Some products in this group are Biostar-1 to Biostar-6, with Biostar-3 and Biostar-5 being extensively tested in field trials.

Pheromone and Hormone-based Formulations

These formulations utilize pheromones and hormones to disrupt the mating behavior of pests. They are highly species-specific and have a low environmental impact, making them safe for crops, beneficial organisms, and the environment. In Vietnam, pheromones are being used to control pests such as webworms, leaf rollers, leaf miners, fruit flies, and borers. Some available products are Sofri Protein 10DD and Entro-Pro 150DD.

It is important to note that, according to experts, biological pesticides should not be used in conjunction with chemical pesticides. These products should be stored properly and not be kept for an extended period (as they have a longer shelf life with higher efficacy).
