High Yield Tilapia Farming Techniques

Tilapia farming is now a trend of many farmers. Tilapia is easy to care for, quick to harvest and highly profitable. The content of this article will help farmers better understand tilapia farming techniques. We invite you to take a moment to read the article.

Technical requirements for building ponds

The pond area is from a few hundred m2 to 1 ha, suitable from 1,000 to 5,000 m2.

Reasonable depth from 1.5 2m.

Thickness of bottom mud 15 20cm.

Tilapia ponds must be built according to certain standards

The water source for the pond must be active, the water quality is not contaminated, no toxic substances, dissolved oxygen content 3mg/l, pH: 6.5 8.

The pond bank must be firm, not shady, not leaking, and the pond bottom is inclined to the drain at an angle of 3-5 degrees.

Active water supply and drainage system.

Preparing the pond

Drain the water, reinforce the pond bank, fill the leak, adjust the bottom mud layer, repair the banks and drains.

Disinfect the pond: Use powdered lime with a dosage of 7-15kg/100m2.

Carry out fertilizing, causing color:

+ Well composted manure with 2% lime powder. Amount of fertilizer: 30-50kg/100m2 pond, spread evenly throughout the pond bottom.

+ Green manure (liquid leaves, peanut leaves, soybean leaves, white flower leaves) : 30-50kg/100m2 pond, bundled into bunches to put in the pond, when the leaves are washed, pick up the hard stalks.

Draining water into the pond: The water taken into the pond must be carefully filtered through the filter mesh.

+ Water after being taken into the pond, soak for 5-7 days and then release the fish.

Release of fingerlings

Breeding time:

+ Spring crop: February-March (solar calendar).

+ Autumn crop: July-August (solar calendar).

Stocked fingerlings : Male monosexual tilapia.

Stocking standards: The stocked fingerlings must be healthy, not sick, not deformed, have intact fins, balanced development, and not close before being released into the pond.

Size of fingerlings stocked : For fingerlings saved in the previous year : size 20 25g/fish; for fingerlings in the year: size 5-10g/fish.

Stocking method: For seed transported by oxygen pump bag: leave the whole bag of fish in the pond, rotate the bag for 5-10 minutes, open the bag to add water and then release the fish slowly into the pond.

Stocking density: 2-3 fish/m2.

Management care

Apply colorants (create natural food for fish).

+ Well composted manure with 2% lime powder applied 20-30 kg/100m2/week.

+ Green manure: 20-25kg/100m2/week.

+ Inorganic fertilizers: Additional fertilizer has the effect of causing fast water color, used when the pond is slow to color.

– Amount: 0.4kg protein + 0.2kg phosphorus/100m2.

– How to apply: Dissolve inorganic fertilizer evenly with water, then sprinkle it evenly on the surface of the pond, apply in the morning on a sunny day.

Refined food

+ Including rice bran, corn bran, potato, cassava, fish meal, soybean meal, bean residue, agricultural by-products….

+ Pure food needs to be cooked, solid, before feeding fish. Spread the feed on the food floor or clean pond bottom areas. Feed should be concentrated at fixed positions in the pond. If it is not possible to cook, use about 15% of flour as a binder, mix well, add wet water and hold it for each year to feed the fish.

Green food: vegetables, duckweed, grass, seaweed…

+ To reduce the cost of feed, we should apply the fish farming model in the VAC system, taking advantage of the waste from the cage and the by-products of the garden.

Food servings:

– In the first stage, feed 5-7% of the body weight of the fish.

– Later stage (fish >100g/fish): feed 2-4% of body weight.

– Feeding time: morning feeding at 7-8 o’clock, afternoon feeding at 15-16 o’clock.

Pond management

+ Check the growth rate of fish every month to provide reasonable food

+ Detailed record of related issues during the rearing process.

+ When detecting diseased fish or unusual phenomena occurring in the pond, it must be treated promptly.

+ Maintain a stable water level throughout the culture period.

+ Closely monitor the color of the pond water during the rearing process to have a reasonable fertilizer plan (pond water is green in color, bananas or green pea pods are fine).

+ Harvest the whole: collected by net before draining.

+ Monogamous tilapia reared after 5 months can reach a weight of 400-600 g/fish, survival rate is 70-80%, yield is 8-10 tons/ha/crop.

We are very hopeful with the content shared in this article. Farmers will have more useful experiences to apply when raising tilapia. Wish farmers success and profit with this breeding model.
