Fertilize orchids with correct technique

Fertilizing orchids at the right rate is very important in the growth and development of orchids. In this article, I would like to share with you the formulas for fertilizing orchids at the right rate, to help the best care stage.

3 main elements

N, P, K with ratios depending on the purpose of use, orchid species, growth period of orchids. In addition, it is also possible to combine more trace elements such as copper (Cu), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) … and some other essential vitamins.

Fertilizer rate for orchids

Usually people use 4 rates of fertilizer for orchids as follows:

Ratio: 1:1:1 ratio N:P:K equal.
Ratio: 3:1:1 high N ratio.
Ratio: 1:3:1 high P ratio.
Ratio: 1:1:3 high K ratio.

In addition, there are many other ratios such as 3: 1:2; 3:2:1…

Fecal concentration

In each ratio, the concentration of 3 substances N, P, K also changes.

Example: According to the formula of LeConfle (1981), we have:

High formula: 30 – 10 – 10 (50) 3:1:1 ratio for growth and leafing.
Low formula: 10 – 18 – 10 (38) 1:2:1 ratio for flowering.
Low formula: 10 – 10 – 20 (40) 1:1:2 ratio for rooting.

However, this amount of fertilizer is very flexible. It depends on weather such as humidity, light, temperature… Depending on the growth stage of orchids, adjust accordingly.

Besides, people also use organic fertilizers and other essential elements. There are many types of organic fertilizers such as urine, animal manure, animal carcasses, soaked soybean seeds, etc.

These types of organic fertilizers are very good for orchids, but when used, pay attention to the way of watering, the concentration of watering. Avoid harm to orchids (with animal manure and animal remains must be soaked to rot), avoid poisoning orchids.

Instructions on how to fertilize orchids with correct technique

There are many ways to irrigate fertilizers, but the general rule is that when watering, the following two requirements must be met:

Water the fertilizer so that the plant can absorb the most.
Fertilizer for the most economic.

The root is the main organ that absorbs water and mineral salts for the plant. In addition, leaves also have the ability to absorb water and mineral salts. Especially in the case of orchid seedlings. But for large orchids, the absorption through the leaves is not enough nutrients for the growth and development of the plant. Therefore, it must be watered so that the roots can absorb nutrients most favorably.

If fertilizing like watering, you must use too much fertilizer. Do not save manure. In order to achieve the above two requirements at the same time, according to the results achieved in the past years, before fertilizing, we should water through a turn of water to make the planting material easily permeable to the fertilizer and not run off. This will save 1/2 the amount of fertilizer.

1. Orchids after tissue transplant

After being taken from the substrate, 4-5 seedlings of orchids need to be bundled into one with coir or bamboo shoots. Water well to keep enough moisture. At this stage, orchids need to grow leaves and roots, so it is necessary to use high-grade foliar fertilizer 15-30-15 alternating with NPK: 30-10-10. Every 3-4 times watering 30-10-10, watering once is equal to 15-30-15. How to irrigate 1-2 grams of this fertilizer in 4 liters of water to irrigate periodically every 2-3 days, watering in the early morning or cool afternoon. After 3-4 months, the orchids have become small orchids, need to separate each plant to plant in pots with coir or charcoal medium.

2. The stage of plants from the garden to adulthood

Periodic watering by mixing 1-2 grams of NPK fertilizer: 30-10-10 in 4 liters of water, periodically watering every 4-5 days. Every 3 – 4 times watering with NPK fertilizer – 30-10-10 need to be watered once with NPK: 20-20-20 to help the orchid grow more leaves and buds.

Fertilize orchids properly

3. Mature orchid

Mature orchids need to use fertilizer NPK: 10-30-10, NPK: 15-30-15, NPK: 20-20-20 depending on the period. The concentration mixed with all these fertilizers is from 5 to 10 grams / 4 liters of water to spray on both stems and roots.

After the flowers fade: use NPK fertilizer: 30-10-10 to promote good leaf growth.

Before flowering: use NPK: 15-30-15 or NPK: 10-52-17 to help the plant produce good flowers, large and beautiful flowers. When the flowers have bloomed: water with NPK fertilizer: 20-20-20 to maintain long-lasting flowers, beautiful colors.

In addition to pure manure, it is possible to use oil cake soaked in diluted water to irrigate orchids (use carefully because the oil cake solution is a good environment for fungal diseases to arise. If possible, it should be mixed with fungicides. Soak 100 grams of cake. oil in 2 liters of water, to get rid of the rotten smell. Use 1 liter of this soaking water mixed with 4 liters of clean water to irrigate periodically every 10-15 days.
