Simple hydroponic vegetable growing technique at home

Plant hydroponic vegetables is no longer a rare method found in today’s neighborhoods. With convenience and ease of care, the hydroponic method brings clean and delicious vegetable seasons for gardeners.

What is hydroponics?

Hydroponics does not require soil, instead the plants live on an inert and water-holding medium that is exposed to a clean hydroponic solution. This solution provides water and nutrients necessary for plants to grow and develop quickly.

What to prepare for hydroponics?

Planting site:

We can put it on your balcony, terrace or anywhere where you can put a vegetable rig. However, special attention should be paid to the following factors.

Sunshine:

The hydroponic method requires a large amount of sunlight, the stronger the light, the better the new hydroponic vegetables will grow. With any hydroponic or hydroponic method, the amount of light a day is at least 6-12 hours. This means that if your yard gets at least 6 hours of sunlight a day, it’s great that you have a beautiful and productive vegetable garden.

Your home direction:

Why is the direction of the house related to growing vegetables hydroponically? Because it determines the amount of sunlight shining on the vegetable growing area. Houses with corrugated iron often limit the amount of light coming in. This greatly affects the growth process of hydroponic vegetables. So, if your house is facing east or west, there’s still a good chance you’ll get about 6 hours a day. So what to do with other house directions? So let’s consider the next factor.

Area around your house:

If the terrace has a corrugated iron roof covering the hydroponic area, your balcony will be limited in the amount of sunlight absorbed. Surrounding places such as: Front yard, left side and right side. In case your house is covered on all 3 sides by another taller house, no matter which direction the house is, it is unlikely to be planted. Replacing roof panels with light panels is a good way to improve the lighting situation for your future hydroponic vegetable garden.

Suitable design:

When choosing a well-lit place for growing hydroponic vegetables, this is the time when you need to choose the design that best suits the area of your home. Here are some popular designs today.

Semi-A design:

Semi-A trusses are suitable for areas behind high walls. Truss lean against the wall or balcony, facing out to catch light. We can design 2 semi-A trusses on both sides to have a garden space with high aesthetics.

Flat shoes:

Flat trusses are suitable for terrace areas without a corrugated iron roof. Truss is 1 – 1.5m wide, each rig has 8-10 hydroponic tubes that can be from 3 to 6m long depending on the length of your space. Can be designed from 1 to 2 floors. Each floor should be 45 – 60cm high to ensure that the bottom floor is not blocked by too much light from the upper floor.

Design letter A:

Therefore, it is necessary to have a large terrace and not have a corrugated iron roof. The A-frame should come with a roof to avoid direct rain on the truss, to avoid breaking and damaging leaves in heavy rain.

Hydroponic vegetables cannot be without water and electricity if you grow them using the reflux method. Please note and ensure that whether the terrace or the balcony can always provide clean water and have an electrical outlet so that the system is always running.

Using the hydroponic reflux model:

When installing a hydroponic system, you need a covered iron truss, a tank and a plumbing system dedicated vegetable tube and pump fish, planting basket…vv After selecting the design option, we will proceed with the installation according to the appropriate design.
The basic requirements include:

  • The water supply system ensures evenness, avoiding excess pressure at the top and underpressure at the end. The water supply hole into the pipe is at least 6mm and the supply wire is usually black to avoid moss – clinging to the inner pipe wall and causing the pipe to clog.
  • Return water system: Use 60-90 pipes if it is a horizontal truss or direct return to the tank. Regularly clean to avoid algae.

Automatic timer: Used to avoid heavy rain causing short and fire, damage to equipment. The timer in the summer is 30 minutes/time. In winter it is 60 minutes/time.

A simple and easy way to grow:

Method 1: Before putting the seedlings on the planting platform, you must plant the seeds in the hydroponic vegetable growing medium. With the hydroponic method of growing vegetables, you can choose to nurse the seeds into coconut fiber pellets or specialized foam. Each price type has its own advantages and disadvantages. If you use foam, hydroponic vegetables will be clean and cost-effective, but the disadvantage is that the sponge is easy to dry, when seeding, it is necessary to keep the sponge moist. On the contrary, if you choose coir pellets, the advantage is that it is easy to nurse, retains moisture well and the disadvantage is that the cost is a bit high.

Method 2: Incubate the seeds with coconut fiber pellets (the sponge is also similar), first drop the coir pellets into the water for 3-4 minutes, then the tablets expand. Use your hand to put the seeds into the hole on the coir tablet. Seeds such as vegetables, lettuce will put 2-3 seeds in each tablet with water spinach for 5-7 vegetable seeds/1 coco fiber tablet.

– When the seeds are finished, sprinkle water on the surface of the coir tablets and pour water into the tray filled with ¼ of the coir tablets.

– Put the nursery tray in a cool place for about 1-2 days, in this step there is a small note when the seeds have just sprouted, put the tray in a place with light to avoid long in the shade, the plant will be weak, the stem is a bit long.

– Need to monitor continuously, water regularly to avoid the coir pellets drying out. About 3 days after the plant sprouts, put the seedlings on the tray and mix hydroponic nutrient CM 300PPM.

Growing and caring for hydroponic vegetables

After about 10 – 15 from seed sowing, the plant has 2 true leaves, proceed to put on the planting rig to grow quickly. You can choose 2-leaf or 5-leaf plants to put on the rig. The appropriate interval is when the plant reaches 5 leaves, then the growth rate and nutrient absorption of the plant is strong, the tree grows quickly and evenly. When we pre-incubate for 20-25 days in the tray, you can narrow the harvest time to about 15-20 days each time.

After putting the plants on the rig, it is necessary to regularly check the TDS concentration and the pH level in the solution to ensure the best growth of the plants. The concentration in the reflux hydroponic system should only be from 600 – 800 ppm with leafy vegetables and the pH should be maintained at 5.8 – 6.2 to achieve the best quality of hydroponic vegetables.

Harvest:

When the plants are put on the rig for about 20-35 days, you can start harvesting when the plants reach a weight of about 200 grams / plant / basket with lettuce and about 80-100 grams with cabbage / basket.

At that time, there was no need to water, no more catching weeds, no dirt and extremely time-saving. It is convenient to grow and take care of hydroponic vegetables. Every 5-7 days you have to re-measure TDS and the time to measure and add plant nutrients does not take more than 10 minutes. So you can save loads of time to spend traveling or playing with friends, shopping, no longer bothering to go away without anyone watering, so wonderful, isn’t it?
